Safety Netting

Safety at heights is one of the fundamental concerns for Health and Safety in construction, the safety netting service Response Safety Netting offers addresses these concerns

There is a universal method of hazard management at heights. It follows a hierarchy of alternatives to manage these hazards. The levels are able to be identified as follows:

  1. Remove Hazard (do work an alternative way)
  2. Guard Hazard (use edge protective scaffold)
  3. Guard Workers (introduce PPE systems)
  4. Mitigate Impact of Hazard Realisation
Most Health and Safety officers will move down the list of options to find a solution.

On their introduction to the UK market safety nets were often considered a level 4 solution but with the introduction of flat installation lightweight net they are now considered a level 2 solution of collective protection (FASET Regs 2003). This means:

  • Nets can be installed so close to the work level it prevents the kind of fall likely to cause injury.
  • Nets offer a collective form of protection which is deemed an improvement on harnesses or lanyards i.e. PPE relies on the active responsibility of the individual worker.

The technical side of fall prevention has now embraced energy absorption as the fundamental issue to govern design and manufacture of nets meaning fall arrest nets are now one of the most effective and economical choices for hazard management at the first level available after removal of the Hazard.
